The Business of Craft Brewing

On December 2, 2015 the report from Brewbound listed the number of breweries in the U.S. at 4144 surpassing the previous record of 4131 which dated back to 1873. Based on the “localization beer culture” which was an outgrowth of the localvore movement in the food world the question is how far can it go. It is based on the mindset today of folks valuing knowing where their food, along with craft beer comes from. This is referred to as the “Belgian Model” where basically a brewery on every block. With U.S. craft brewers producing 22.2 million barrels last year representing only 11% of all beer production, perhaps the sky is the limit. But as with all businesses, opening a craft brewing business is simply not a license to print money but rather to become part of a community and perhaps a successful small business. This webinar will address the basic steps to start and grow a craft brewery. Participants will learn about state, local and federal regulations, setting goals for your brewery, creating a business model and looking at the financial aspects of the craft brewing business.

Speaker(s): Charles Ininger (Charley) is currently the Area Business Advisor for Central Vt., as well as the Craft Beverage Specialist for the state. He joined the VtSBDC family in 2009 as part of the “Small Business Jobs Act”. Upon close of those funds, he began working as the EDA Disaster Preparedness Statewide Specialist, providing technical assistance in the development of loan package requests and helping clients with disaster preparedness and resiliency plans. Prior to joining VtSBDC he owned several businesses in Vt., as well as, being a private consultant. He has been an adjunct teacher at the college level, as well as, teaching the Business of Brewing at the American Brewers Guild. Tim Barnes is co-founder of The Black Tooth Brewing Company in Sheridan, the founder and president of the Wyoming Craft Brewers Guild and a life-long Wyoming resident. Tim will provide insight into the Wyoming side of the business of brewing.
