Government Accounting & Your SBIR/STTR Proposal

Many SBIR/STTR applicants do not understand government accounting, and that leads to errors in budgeting and the cost proposal. To avoid these costly mistakes, SBIR/STTR applicants need to get a clear understanding of how government accounting works, and what terms like “allowability” and “reasonableness” mean. The purpose of this webinar is to explain such terms, and give attendees a way to visualize and understand the relationship of direct and indirect costs, both in theory and reality. Attendees of this webinar will gain the basic understanding of government accounting that will permit them to develop a defensible indirect cost rate and SBIR/STTR cost proposal in the second webinar “Developing Your SBIR/STTR Cost Proposal.”

Speaker(s): Jim Greenwood and his wife, Gail, have been involved in the SBIR program since its inception in 1983. The Greenwoods have taught SBIR/STTR workshops in 48 states plus Puerto Rico and Washington D.C., offering training through local and regional economic development groups, universities, Federal laboratories, SBDCs and MEPs. The Greenwoods also have taught at many of the National SBIR Conferences in the past decade, including the most recent national conferences in New Orleans, Portland, Washington DC and Austin. They are recipients of the coveted Tibbetts Award, based on their contributions to SBIR/STTR outreach and education efforts, and were recognized by the Small Business Technology Council as “Champions for Small Business” for their outreach efforts during the latest SBIR/STTR programs reauthorization effort. Jim Greenwood serves as a commercialization reviewer for the SBIR and STTR programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF), reviewing both Phase I and II proposals, as well as proposals for NSF’s
