The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plays an important role in American health care and in the development of new ways to combating disease. However, the public and researchers often sees their activities as opaque and arcane. In this webinar, we will demystify the process of drug development and then gaining FDA approval. As part of the presentation, Dr. Randy Goff will describe his experience in the field of drug discovery and the process of obtaining FDA approval for Mylotarg, an innovative anti-cancer drug.
Speaker(s): Randy Goff is a native of Southern California but has moved around the country extensively for his career. While earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry at Cal State Long Beach, he worked for several years in analytical and product research labs at US Borax (mining) and Sherwin, Inc. (aerospace). He earned his PhD in chemistry at Brigham Young University synthesizing and studying biologically-active agents that stimulate the immune system. He did postdoctoral research in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying chemoselective methods of attaching sugar molecules to pharmaceutical compounds. He is currently an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Western Wyoming Community College where he teaches general and organic chemistry courses.
